Nineteen Penn Staters spent Spring Break 2016 in Miami on a Service-Learning trip through Door Miami. In a whirlwind sampler of social and justice issues and agencies that address them in the Miami area, students and campus ministry staff learned about issues of aging, homelessness, immigration, farm work, poverty and discrimination. Kyle Snowberger (Senior in Aerospace Engineering from Chambersburg, PA) shares his thoughts.
“I was surprised by how much of the city we saw, both in terms of neighborhoods and people. It is interesting how much polarity can exist, from the luxury high-rise condos to the shrinking of Little Haiti due to gentrification, to the plight of the homeless living among million dollar homes.”
“I found joy in the faces of the people we helped. The clients at Easter Seals with dementia and Alzheimer’s enjoyed our companionship and my piano music. The residents at the Chapman Project homeless shelter enjoyed the meals we served them.”
