Weekly Events

Thursday Evening Prayer | Thursdays 6 pm at Pasquerilla Spiritual Center (resumes August 28)

Evening Prayer includes song, prayer and shared reflection for a relaxed break in the midst of your week.  This is a place to truly find community on campus and ground yourself. Interactive reflection on the readings will give you something new to consider. Each week dinner is offered afterward and everyone is welcome.

Thursday Dinner | Thursdays 6:45 pm at Pasquerilla Spiritual Center

After worship on Thursdays, stay for a meal with the community.  Dinner is a time to relax and talk together while enjoying home-cooked meals that include vegetarian options and dessert.  Plan to feed your body as well as your spirit!

Office Hours | On or off campus by appointment

Campus Minister Alicia Anderson is available when you need to talk. Check in about your day, ask questions, share concerns or fears, get some advice, or ask for prayers.  If you’d like to meet, email Alicia to arrange a time and place that works for you!

Other Opportunities | Discussion & Community

Lunch & Connection Noon-ish on campus (check calendar for exact info)

Bring your lunch and eat on campus with Campus Minister Alicia Anderson.  You’ll find dates and times on our calendar – and if you’d like to suggest a day or time or place, just email ara2@psu.edu and we’ll get it on the calendar! Typically, we’ll meet on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday around noon.  Favorite places in the past have included Pasquerilla Spiritual Center, tables outside the HUB or Kern, and near Berkey Creamery.

Greatest Hits of the Bible | Dates and times TBD

We will look at some of the classics of the Old and New Testaments (stories from childhood, Jesus’ parables, signs and miracles, surprises from scripture and more!)  and talk about what these stories help us understand about God, ourselves, the ancient world and the world around us now. Not your typical Bible study –  lots of conversation, reflection, and openness to your questions. NO experience needed. Everyone is welcome!

Questions Not Answers (QNA)Monthly at Grace Lutheran 7 – 8 pm

Questions, not Answers (QNA) is a monthly inter-generational discussion for students and community members.  We talk about questions that don’t have easy or clear answers, and we often leave with more questions than we came with!  Gather in the library at Grace Lutheran Church for this lively and fun group facilitated by Paula Droege from the Penn State Philosophy Department in conjunction with Alicia Anderson, campus minister.  September 21 – watch for topics and the October, November and December dates on our calendar!

News and Faith | Dates and location TBD

As people of faith, our beliefs and priorities shape how we understand the things that happen in the world around us. We’ll gather and talk about our reactions, questions and concerns in light of what is happening in the world and in public life.

Religious Studies Book Club | Dates and books TBD

The Society for the Study of Religion (SSR) at Penn State explores a new book each semester. Copies of the book are available for students who are interested in participating from Alicia Anderson at ara2@psu.edu.  Watch for more information in the coming weeks.

Media – “The Good Place” | Dates and location TBD

Faith and philosophy help us explore big questions.  TV show “The Good Place” takes a hilarious and accessible look at philosophy and how humans live together.  We will watch some of the show and talk together with Professor Paula Droege of the Philosophy Department about the ideas, questions it raises, and consider the ways media tackles issues of faith.

What would you like to talk about? | Dates and location TBD

Are there topics, issues, or ideas you’d like us to spend time talking about together? We are always open to looking at what students want to talk about and through the semester we will choose topics, dates, and locations!  Email Campus Minister Alicia Anderson ara2@psu.edu to make suggestions and find a good time to gather!

Other Opportunities | Volunteering

Volunteering at the Arboretum | Dates TBD

Join other volunteers at the Penn State Arboretum and help in the gardens or with the Pumpkin Festival! Watch for dates and more info!  You’ll get more details once you sign up, but the Arboretum is off Park Avenue, near Shortlidge. Supplies and equipment will be provided, and you will need to dress for the weather and bring a water bottle.

Volunteering with the Anti-Hunger Programs | Thursday afternoons

In partnership with the Central PA Food Bank, YMCA Anti-Hunger Programs and Grace Lutheran Church, volunteers help package and distribute food to families and individuals on the 2nd and 4th Thursday each month. Come for an hour or the whole afternoon! Visit our blog post for details and contact Alicia Anderson at ara2@psu.edu for more info.

More Service Events / Projects

We have worked together on group projects like the Volunteering at the Arboretum, Virtual CROP Walk in October, Clothing Transit through the fall, online service projects, and others.   In the spring, we’ll offer at least one each month.  If you have ideas to suggest, please contact Campus Minister Alicia Anderson at ara2@psu.edu.
