Advent is a season of hope. Hope in the midst of darkness.
I feel surrounded by the contrasts of the season.
The weight of work and deadlines as the end of semester approaches in contrast with the freedom that comes once finals week ends.
The conflict and deep sadness of our nation’s racial and economic divide in contrast with the countless voices calling for justice.
The limited daylight of late fall in contrast with the illumination of just one small light.
The mayhem and expectations of the holiday season in contrast with the peace and beauty of a quiet manger scene.
When my family lights the Advent wreath on our dinner table each night, my daughter always jumps up and shuts off the lights. I open the matchbox in the dark. As I strike the match, we begin to sing “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” and I light the candle. The contrast of sudden darkness changed into light reminds us that no matter how dark, no matter how hopeless things may seem, the love and light of God will bring a new dawn.
Whether your heart is heavy from the demands of schoolwork, the sad reality of racial injustice and unrest, the aftermath of broken relationships, the uncertainty of the future, or some other burden, may you find hope and encouragement in the promise of God’s presence in the world. God turns up in the most unlikely and unexpected places, bringing light and hope and new life.
Hope in the midst of darkness. –ara
Prayer
God of light and life,
Sometimes pressure, fear, sadness, and more surround and fill me.
All hope seems lost.
In these moments, bring light into my darkness.
Remind me of the love and hope and promise your presence brings to the world, and to my life.
Open my eyes to the the light in my life.
Calm my fears. Comfort my sadness.
Surround me and fill me with your hope.
Help me to see your light, shining in the darkness.
Amen.
