LCM Building in New Orleans!

Campus Ministry is making a difference this summer at the ELCA Youth Gathering . . . for the youth who participate and for three families in the New Orleans area. Build-NOLA is a project that brings together the building skills and community relationships of local Habitat for Humanity affiliates, the fundraising-for-a-great-cause skills and service-learning expertise of campus ministry and the endless enthusiasm of high school youth and their desire to live God’s call and help those who are in need.

Campus ministry staff have gathered financial support from congregations, campus ministries and individuals across the nation, and during the Youth Event, they will help the youth think about issues of housing and poverty in our communities.  Habitat staff will guide the construction of walls (using 2x4s, nails and hammers), oversee the transportation of the completed walls to building sites, and will complete the task of making homes for three hard-working families near New Orleans.  Youth will give their time and energy, leaving New Orleans with a sense that they have helped provide a home for those without shelter, and a fuller understanding of our call to serve in Christ’s name.

Alicia Anderson, campus minister at Penn State, is among the team of campus ministry staff working on this project, raising funds and working with the youth as they build walls for the houses.  There is still time to contribute to the project – costs are $17,000 for lumber, nails and transportation of the completed wall sections.  You can send a check with Build-NOLA on the memo line, or visit the LCM-Clemson online giving page and make a contribution there.
