my snowdogs

I haven’t written about my dogs lately.  Really, that is somewhat surprising.

They are part of every day for me.  Each day begins with our morning walk. In these summer months, we walk at or shortly before sunrise, when it is cool.  Aspen and Lola and I discover the new day together.  Our evening walk timing depends on the temperature, since snow dogs don’t do well walking in the 80s or 90s.  Some days, we walk well after the sun has set, in the dark, when it finally begins to cool down.  Between these bookends, as I have been working from home, the dogs are my constant companions.  They settle down to nap near me if I settle into a spot in the living room, follow me to settle in and sleep under my feet when I work at the dining room table, or haunt their side of the closed door when I go to my room for a Zoom worship service or discussion group.  There is keen interest when I make lunch.  Most days, between 4:30 and 5:30 pm, if I am still working on the computer, Lola will come and put her nose on the keyboard to remind me it is time to go stop and take her outside.

They each have their own personality.  Lola is younger and smaller.  She is relentless, restless and eager.  Aspen is relaxed, confident and loving, but more reserved.  Together, they watch with great interest what is happening in the yard from the deck, or the activity in the neighborhood from the front window.  They pay little attention when I head out through the door to the garage, but not when I head out the front door.  They are always happy to see neighbors and friends walk by, and they will watch a bunny or in the yard for hours on end. They are eager to do some obedience work when they see I have treats.

I am grateful for these silly dogs.  They shape the rhythms of my day.  They bring a bit of the wild and untamed world into my day.  They love without hesitation.  They are a blessing in my life.

Peace,

Alicia
